Tattoo Removal
At Dermatology Associates, a Q-switched Nd:Yag laser is used for the removal of tattoos and brown spots (sun spots). Laser removal of tattoos is the safest and most effective way to remove a tattoo.
Tattoo removal requires multiple treatments. On average, tattoos can be removed in four to eight visits though many more sessions may be required.
Factors that affect the number of treatments for tattoo removal are:
During the procedure itself, a handpiece is placed on the surface of the skin and a pulsed laser light is delivered. The laser light energy targets and breaks up the tattoo ink which over time leads to dilution of the ink and lightening of the tattoo. The patient will feel what is often described as a snapping or stinging sensation. We often use topical or local anesthetics to reduce any discomfort. After the treatment, the area appears red and will become swollen and crusted, similar to what the tattoo looked like after it was placed. The area is covered with vaseline and a bandage. Daily wound care is needed for three to seven days after each treatment. The area needs to be protected from sun exposure prior to and after all laser treatments.
Side effects from the laser treatment may include hypopigmentation, which means that the treated area becomes lighter than the surrounding skin, or hyperpigmentation, which means the treated area becomes darker than the surrounding skin. This is not usually permanent and often fades with time. In rare cases, textural changes and scarring develop.
If you are interested in having a tattoo removed, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Buscher in our Danbury office. She will explain what to expect; the expected number of treatments, the costs for the procedure and the post-operative care.
Insurance carriers do not cover the cost of tattoo removal because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Treatment fees are required at the time of the treatment. The cost of the initial consultation will be applied to the overall cost of the procedure.
